Mavis and her family demonstrated and worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for equality in the United States. In December 2016, Mavis traveled to Washington DC to receive the coveted Kennedy Center Honors from Barack Obama, with whom she has a long-standing friendship. Mavis invited Wilco and her friend Jeff Tweedy to the festivities; they discussed and compared the struggle for equality in the 60s to that of today. Inspired by these events, Mavis and Jeff met and wrote this new album together. If All I Was Was Black, produced by Jeff Tweedy.
