Certainly, stunning versions have been given by Rademann (in 2014) and Cohen (in 2018), and for Hänssler, Rilling conducted nothing less than Auger, Equiluz, and Watts in 1976... but here (in 2008), both works experienced the world premiere recording of their original versions (1749 for the Magnificat, 1773 or 74 for the cantata). Once again, thank you Carus. The cantata, whose text is really only \"Christmas\" in its last two numbers, fully embraces festive codes and includes some surprises: modulations, unexpected cadences, or even the sudden appearance of timpani (\"The suns sing his praise\"). While the soloists may not be the stars heard elsewhere, they are nonetheless highly eloquent and exhibit an exhilarating bravery in the demanding Magnificat. The choir holds its own and delivers a beautiful performance from start to finish: dense, fervent, and intelligible (perhaps a little less well captured in the Magnificat). Not flashy in the slightest and conducted with a lively hand, a very beautiful disc.
