Kurt Vile once sang he had a highway in his head, but Matt Kivel (his former Woodsist label-mate) literally has the highway in his head. Kivel grew up in Santa Monica, California, ceaselessly traveling the 10, the 101, Pacific Coast Highway, and all the other freeways Angelenos affectionately call “the freeways.” He got his musical start in the much-talked-about, Eagle Rock-based indie band Princeton. After relentless touring across the country and a subsequent burnout, he came back with a string of critically acclaimed, hauntingly stark solo albums.Over the next decade, Kivel would work closely with a growing collection of brilliant and varied musicians from around the world, including Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Alasdair Roberts, Madi Diaz, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Jana Horn, and Satomimage. He moved to Austin, Texas, then left for a spell to New York only to return to Austin where he settled down. In 2017, he began writing the songs for what would become his eighth solo album, “Escape from L.A.”
