What happens in the year following a breakup? Time passes, cherry trees blossom again, birthdays come and go, and the banality of everyday life resumes its course, except that a huge void has opened up in the middle, and no one else seems to notice. It is precisely this void that Ditch Me, Matching Outfits’ second album, meticulously examines. By adding pastel hues, a touch of Velvet Underground, and three-part harmonies with international accents, the Berlin trio transforms ordinary heartbreaks into bittersweet pop. We encounter an ex who stops to buy toilet paper and snacks on the way to the breakup, a sudden realization while reading a grandmother's obituary, or even work troubles, the inability to drive, and the oddities of urban dating. These are songs that recount the intimate with irony, lucidity, and much tenderness.
