Darkland

Description

Darkland is a light collection of material from the Tulips sessions that did not make the original LP. Originally a digital-only release for connoisseurs in fall 2018, it came out after the 2020 reissue of Tulips. The album plays like an alternate view of Maston's snapshots; a companion piece to the LP proper with a similar blend of shorter themes and more complete tracks. Darkland begins with its 39-second title track before launching into "Tulips," that full title track that never was. It is a true stunner of percussion-rich electric piano that would have fit comfortably on the album proper. But now, this gem of "downlifting" has ample room to shine on this record. Just like Tulips before it, Simon Francis's vinyl mastering for Darkland was cut at 45 RPM. The artwork was also designed by Frank himself as a literal visual continuation of the Tulips cover.
