Come On Come On

Description

Come On Come On is not only Mary Chapin Carpenter's most popular album, with sales of 3 million copies. It is also a landmark of contemporary country music. No less than seven of its songs became country hits: "I Feel Lucky," "I Take My Chances," "Not Too Much to Ask," "The Hard Way," "He Thinks He'll Keep Her," and two inspired covers, of "The Bug" by Dire Straits and "Passionate Kisses" by Lucinda Williams. More importantly, this 1992 release paved the way for what country music would become in the 21st century with its savvy seasoning of pop and soft-rock sounds in a more personal style of country songwriting from a female perspective. If this sounds familiar to you, you're not wrong; the remarkable commercial success of Come On Come On is not the only thing this record has in common with Taylor Swift's early work. However, it also crossed into the realm of rock in a way that, arguably, Swift's records have not; the thriving Americana and alt-country audience of the early '90s devoured this album, and guest stars like Rosanne Cash, The Indigo Girls, and Shawn Colvin only added to its street credibility.
