MARKETA IRGLOVA, a 23-year-old singer who is half of THE SWELL SEASON and an Academy Award winner, releases her first solo album today, "Anar." The young artist grew up in the Czech Republic and received training as a classical singer and pianist. Moving to New York, her relationship with music evolves and deepens. She cites influences ranging from OTIS REDDING to NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS, as well as the soundtrack of "Jesus Christ Superstar." She has already had the opportunity to tour as a singer alongside IRON AND WINE, but she especially amazed everyone with her song "Falling Slowly," used in the Oscar-winning film "Once." On her first album, she creates a delicate balance between ethereal vocals and expansive instrumentation. Furthermore, it was after being struck by the color contrast of a painting of a pomegranate, a crimson red against a golden background, discovered at an exhibition by Iranian artist NAHID HAGIGAT, that MARKETA IRGLOVA decided to title her album "Anar" (the Iranian word for pomegranate). For her, the pomegranate symbolizes the fertile ground of creativity on which she has set foot since moving to New York. This symbol also suits her album perfectly.
