This immense pianist, whose life is a novel shared between Bulgaria and France in sequences worthy of adventure films with music as a backdrop, is releasing his first solo album. From his family home in Sofia, where he grew up peacefully with his pianist father and singer mother, to the rigid training of Bulgarian conservatories, to his incredible arrival in France, and finally to his settling in Lyon where he founded the jazz department at the Lyon Conservatory, Mario Stantchev can claim a life of unusual intensity. This intensity led him to seek new avenues and collaborate with numerous musicians in all genres: classical, gypsy, rock, pop, contemporary, and jazz! He has collaborated with Ron Carter, Daniel Humair, Adam Nussbaum, Riccardo Del Fra, Steve Swallow, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, André Ceccarelli, Laurent Blumenthal, Louis Sclavis, Toots Thielemans, Lionel Martin, and with Claude Méfano and Claude Ballif's Ensemble 2E2M and the Ensemble Intervalles. His music, his thirst for freedom, for encounters, and his interest in all types of music: "... this devil of a pianist is here for the sheer joy of playing, and it's infectious: departures from tonality, classical quotes, various traps and improvised delights..."
