The first complete recording of La Callas made under the aegis of artistic director Walter Legge for EMI/Columbia, this recording of Lucia di Lammermmoor by Donizetti remains her first studio collaboration with Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, and her mentor, Tullio Serafin. It was the previous year, in 1952, that Maria Callas debuted in the role of Lucia. Since then, she gave a tragic dimension to the character, the very archetype of the fragile heroine, championed by the bel canto period.
