Callas's recordings of French music are rare and exquisite jewels. In the French version of Gluck’s “Alceste,” a role she sang brilliantly in Italian, she dazzles with her dignified elegance and brilliant Gluckian style, as well as crystal clear diction and perfect phrasing. Her “Carmen” spits fire and is perhaps the most dangerously sexy gypsy you will ever hear. Saint-Saëns' diabolical seductress “Dalilah” is sung with a totally different voice. Silky, husky, and erotic, it is almost unbearable not to fall prey to this siren. Her “Mignon” is deliciously beautiful. But the climax is her “Pleurez mes yeux.” Callas finds incredibly haunting colors and pathos here.
