Maria BC returns with their third studio album, *Marathon*, their second release on Sacred Bones. Born of a sense of urgency, masochistic determination, and enduring stamina, *Marathon* reflects what it means to persevere—whether to resist or merely survive—in what is sure to be a long fight. On the album, Maria BC explores themes of resistance, environmental destruction, personal upheaval, and destruction, all interwoven into energetic and captivating music. While 2023’s *Spike Field* felt like a long exhalation, *Marathon* is a dynamic exploration of endurance, of the will to press on, to resist, to observe, and to survive. On the micro scale, *Marathon* dissects our existence, guided by our personal ambitions, our determination, and our desire to make the most of our lives. On the macro scale, Maria BC analyzes the destructive and extractive energy systems that govern our world: “machines that, at all costs, will continue to operate until they run out,” as they describe them. Written and recorded across the West Coast, the album is both expansive and immediate, musically ranging from airy acoustic songs to glitchy, distorted tracks that channel chaos and disillusionment, all while maintaining a coherent lyrical through line. Across its thirteen songs, *Marathon* doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, such as cruelty and complicity, loss and destruction. But it maintains hope in connection, intimacy, and interference.
