This release is a significant event as the great Marc Minkowski finally shares his vision of the masterpiece of sacred music that is La Passion selon Saint Jean by J.S. Bach. Marc Minkowski waited 30 years before approaching it, because in the 80s, the offerings surrounding the Cantor of Leipzig were such that he did not find it useful to participate, but also because Bach represents a culmination after a long personal journey. After years dedicated to French baroque music, then expanding towards Mozart and opera in general, the artist decided to focus on the roots of the repertoire, Johann Sebastian Bach, the summit of musical Everest. Marc Minkowski treats the Passion according to Saint John like an opera, in a very dramatic way. There are no choirs; it is the 9 soloists who come together to form it. These 9 singers all share the common point of being active in both the lyrical stage and the sacred repertoire. Inspired by both the romantic tradition of a Gunther Ramin or a Peter Schreier on one side, and on the other Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, Marc Minkowski offers us a synthesis that is both powerful and lyrical, but also sharp and totally baroque.
