The legacy of a distinguished successor to Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is brought to light by new recordings on an organ of major historical importance. An emblematic figure in a lineage of 17th-century Dutch musicians, Anthoni van Noordt (1619-1675) was organist of the Nieuwezijds Chapel in Amsterdam from 1636 to 1664, before taking up the more prestigious post at the Nieuwe Kerk until his retirement in 1673. He died two years later. The 1659 tablature collection is the only one that has come down to us devoted to his work. It includes ten sets of variations on psalm melodies from the Geneva Psalter and six fantasias. Psalm 24 stands out for its vibrant originality, a true masterpiece of improvisation. All the pieces in the collection bear witness to Van Noordt's exceptional talent on the organ and demand the same virtuosity and inventiveness from a contemporary performer. The choice of instrument is crucial in this repertoire, and for the final volume of his exciting exploration of North and Central European organ music of the 17th and 18th centuries, Manuel Tomadin selected a superbly preserved original example, dating from 1637 and coming from St. James's Church in Lübeck. The booklet provides a complete description of the organ as well as the list of stops chosen by Tomadin for each piece, and a substantial essay by the organist devoted to the life and work of Van Noordt. Tomadin's interpretations, rich in color and rhythmic flexibility, pay homage to the essentially improvisational character of Van Noordt's language, without downplaying the influence of Sweelinck, the dominant figure in North European organ music of that time, on his style.
