Negropolitaines

Description

After shaking up the dance floors of the 1970s and 1980s with his Afro groove that infused all the music of the time: soul, funk, disco, and hip hop, Manu Dibango became the guiding figure of black music in all of Paris by the late 1980s. Between 1989 and 1992, he recorded the "Negropolitaines" cycle. His idea was to highlight the repertoire of the continent and bring together the finest African musicians in the capital for an intimate and festive gathering, of which he would be the grand chaplain. Afro-beat, high life, mbaqanga, soukouss, rumba (up to Afro-Caribbean biguine)… all these genres come under the benevolent guidance of the artist's saxophone… He was awarded a Victoire de la musique in 1993; Papa Manu then became the pope of world music for the general public and for a whole generation that would (re)discover him. The labels Frémeaux & Associés and Soul Makossa are proud to come together to enable the republication of these recordings initiated by Manu Dibango.
