Ciao! compiles the best of a somewhat forgotten band that, led by the formidable female duo of singer-guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, shook up British new wave. Typical of 4AD’s productions from the era (between 1988 and the mid-90s), the collection features tracks from their debut album, produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins, as well as subsequent releases. With powerful distorted guitars that, while stylistically different, rival the sonic avalanches of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, Lush established itself as one of the strongest bands emblematic of 4AD's signature clear and ethereal sound. With roots in punk and heads in the clouds, the band left a lasting impression with several singles that, at times, leaned towards Britpop. "DeLuxe" is a little gem, and "Ciao!", recorded with Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, is more than an iconoclastic curiosity. Recommended. - Hervé Comte -
