The two other editions are much more exciting. The best-known one remains with Kempff. The recording with Gulda was made in Vienna, in June 1959, in the small hall of the Musikverein. The complete set was released by Deutsche Grammophon the following year. Urania is reissuing these tapes which, in addition to the five sonatas, present the three series of variations. This is nearly all of Beethoven's legacy for the cello, to which we will add the Triple Concerto for piano, violin, and cello. Fournier, the \"aristocrat\" of the cello, and Gulda, not yet the \"troublemaker\" of classical music, engage in a magnificent dialogue. While the bow maintains a perfect balance allowing the sound of the instrument to sing, Gulda multiplies the discoveries. His playing varies constantly as if he must ornament the immutable grandeur of the bow. There is a lot of emotion in this dialogue. Moreover, one can perceive the respect and concentration in every moment from Gulda. The most introspective and slow movements are striking because they heighten the listening experience between the two musicians. Every silence and accent is utilized. The variations, which are often overlooked in the listening of complete sets, reveal themselves to be fascinating here. Indeed, it is paradoxically by borrowing themes from Mozart and Handel that Beethoven expands his reflection and renews the writing of chamber music.
