Description

Lucy Crowe makes her debut on Linn with a programme of songs by Berg, Richard Strauss and Schoenberg. This recital brilliantly demonstrates why she is one of the most important lyric sopranos of her generation. Lucy is accompanied by pianist Anna Tilbrook, with whom she has developed a strong rapport through over twenty years of professional collaboration, marked by numerous concerts at Wigmore Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and at Carnegie Hall in New York. The programme spans both ends of Strauss's prolific career in the art song, featuring five songs from the collection Acht Gedichte aus Letzte Blätter on the one hand, and the sublime posthumously published swan song Vier letzte Lieder on the other. Berg's Sieben frühe Lieder is a major composition evoking Strauss's late Romanticism; it is paired with Vier Lieder by Berg's mentor Schoenberg, characterised by post-Wagnerian chromaticism. Following their concert at Wigmore Hall in June 2020, The Guardian stated: "Berg's Sieben frühe Lieder (...) suit Crowe perfectly, with her refined voice, keen sense of line, and discreet yet clear approach to the word."
