Much like the extraordinary, atomic, and exhilarating rendition of Brel's "Je suis un soir d'été," Des Ruines et des Poèmes never lacks power. Quite the contrary: recorded at Studio Ferber with the help and benevolent ear of Philippe Paradis (Christophe, Thiéfaine, Zazie...), this second album, a kind of second birth, radiates with power and rage, overflowing with heroic beauties, magnificent bites, and tumultuous bitterness. Its clearer lines, the relative starkness of its arrangements, the sharper angles of its repressed electric anger, its mechanical beats, its rough-hewn sounds, its synths as sharp as flint, or its pointillist electricity allow its songs to breathe their tunes, good and bad, much more freely and much more intimately. Darkness, a lot, light, a lot too, one enhancing the other like a yin and yang indispensable to life, to death, to the splendor of all things: it's no wonder that one of Louis Arlette's favorite artists is Caravaggio. And in these dazzling lights and devouring shadows, the French artist's lyrics, with their astonishing truth and sincerity, find a profound resonance.
