Faisant suite au coffret Decca qui illustrait les années passées par Lorin Maazel à la tête de l'orchestre de Cleveland, le présent coffret DG retrace les premiers pas discographiques du jeune prodige américain. Il a 27 ans quand le label jaune lui fait enregistrer en 1957 un double 33 tours regroupant les Roméo et Juliette de Berlioz, Tchaïkovski et Prokofiev, un répertoire très peu enregistré à cette époque, en lui confiant rien moins que la Philharmonie de Berlin. Si un disque Stravinsky vient l'année suivante préfigurer du goût prononcé du chef pour le répertoire du XXème siècle, c'est dans le grand répertoire germanique qu'il doit d'abord faire ses preuves : ce sera chose faite avec les 5ème et 6ème Symphonies de Beethoven (saluées par la presse lors de leur réédition dans la collection du Millénaire), Brahms, Mendelssohn puis l'intégrale des symphonies de Schubert. 1961 voit naître l'enregistrement d'une oeuvre de celui qui était sans doute le plus cher à son coeur, Maurice Ravel : ce sera L'Enfant et les sortilèges, suivi par celui de L'Heure espagnole, des versions si parfaites qu'elles en ont par la suite découragé plus d'un de s'attaquer à l'aventure, et qui resteront sans doute au sommet de la discographie pour de nombreuses décennies encore. Attachement aussi à l'Orchestre National de France, alors celui de la RTF, qu'il avait dirigé dès 1957 et dont il prendra pour près de quinze ans la direction musicale suite à la disparition de Jean Martinon.
