Loraine James' third Hyperdub album, 'Gentle Confrontation', opens a new chapter in her real and sonic life in which she examines her past and present. It is a positively languid and pleasingly dishevelled set, made by listening to her favourite teenage songs; math rock and emo-electronic like DNTEL, Lusine and Telefon Tel Aviv. The album also features an increasingly diverse set of peers, placing them in unusual musical contexts and drawing out sensitive, thoughtful performances. At other times, the album stretches out into a floating ambience, as if searching for a sense of happiness in the everyday. 'Gentle Confrontation' is about relationships (especially family), understanding and giving some grace and attention back, while the record's tone intertwines a watery vibe with denatured rhythm and ASMR beats. These 16 tracks are Loraine's best work to date, and a personal and musical leap forward, offering a totally unique vision of electronic pop music.
