Description

This double CD released under the LPO label offers a generous Prokofiev program. A symphony, a concerto, a ballet suite, and a symphonic poem, all conducted live by the Russian maestro Alexander Lazarev during his visit to London. It’s sure to delight any Russian music lover. The bow of Vadim Repin (a fine player indeed!) works wonders (creamy timbres and finely chiseled dynamics) in the two outer movements of the first violin concerto, while the orchestra never eases the pressure exerted by the insightful baton of the Russian conductor, capable of unleashing thunder (vivacissimo) and embodying the contrasting themes and atmospheres of the Third Symphony, inspired by the opera "The Fiery Angel." The gestures are alternately enchanting, lyrical, dramatic, and theatrical. The second CD is dedicated to the symphonic suite from the ballet "Chout," based on the satirical and grotesque tale by Atanassiev. Once again, the instrumental magic and dramatic madness take hold. One is astounded by the mastery and risk-taking of the musicians of the London orchestra in the sometimes dizzying succession of sequences. In contrast, the poem Dreams unfolds in an almost surreal starry humidity. The ecstatic applause from the audience that follows the final notes testifies to the electric atmosphere of the concert, perfectly captured by a breathtaking sound recording. A must-listen right away. (Jérôme Angouillant)
