Like the character in the poem, Christina tries throughout the album to understand and expel this darkness that has invaded her (and society as a whole) in order to lead a more fulfilling life. As she wrote and recorded the album in her home studio in Athens, Georgia, she thought a lot about her own development and her value as an artist, and where her constantly evolving experimental music could fit in the digital age. Ecology, money, power, and modern feminism are also part of the reflection. Her partner, Kevin Barnes of the band Of Montreal, co-produced and recorded the album. He shares credits on the track \"Even the Good Boys are Bad,\" which refers to the paternal anxiety evoked when Kevin's daughter started dating a boy. \"Futureless Hives of Bel Air\" is an apocalyptic, anti-capitalist song about how we are killing our ecosystem with the idea that the ultra-rich will abandon their homes to go live in space. At its heart, Personalia aims at reconstruction.
