In Your Long Shadow is an album about the wind, Lake Michigan in winter, and the quiet of a long summer evening: elements that convey Lillian King’s grief over the loss of her father, Neil King Jr. When her father passed away in September 2024, grief permeated every aspect of Lillian's life, especially when doing the things her father loved most—all the simple, everyday things that make life worth living: cooking, taking the long way to work, swimming in cold water. In the throes of grief, it seemed impossible to find anything that wouldn't make you even sadder, but when Lillian found these things, she clung to them. It quickly became clear that the best coping mechanisms weren't gin and tonics, but talking as much as possible to her mother and sister, and making an album. Despite the somber subject matter, the recording process was spontaneous and light. Midway through recording In Your Long Shadow, Lillian worried about creating a grief album. Her sister Frances, as usual, offered good advice: “From now on, all albums will be grief albums.” In Your Long Shadow is as much about loss as it is about living with it. Take it with you on a walk.
