Popular Music

Description

Nowadays, everyone is angry. The internet is flooded with it, and people on the streets are angry. LIFE is no exception: the band embodies the latent anger of the British working class in 2017. Their latest single, Euromillions, was a masterstroke, provocatively released on the day of Donald Trump's inauguration, directly attacking the so-called "alt-right." "You have the right to bear arms if your arms are the right color," singer Mez Sanders-Green screamed amid a deafening racket. LIFE is based in Hull, a traditionally underestimated city, whose success is due to its title as UK City of Culture 2017. But behind this cultural rise and media attention, fear persists. It is this fear that permeates the band's debut album, as Mez explains: "Popular Music sounds like panic and anguish, it's the sound of rage at the unknown, at the self-checkout economy. It's an album that captures the state of mind of everyone who feels exploited, and there are a lot of people being taken for a ride right now." The album was produced and mixed by Grammy Award-winning Ian Dowling at The Fish Factory studio in London. It is an explosive and thunderous album that offers no respite. A quintessential punk record, in the vein of Sham 69, whose new single "In Your Hands" (which opens the album) gives a taste of what's to come: anger, agitation, tension.
