In the early 90s, Life of Agony was a straight-up hardcore metal band. Their debut record, River Runs Red, allowed them to build a loyal following through incessant touring and word of mouth, despite minimal MTV and radio play. On their sophomore album, Ugly (1995), the band opted for a different musical direction: they fused their hardcore with the melodic alternative rock of Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains. Longtime fans and general audiences were somewhat enthusiastic about this change, and the band found themselves with a new dilemma: should they stick to this new musical direction, or conform to their fans' expectations of what their music should sound like? The band chose to stick to their guns and follow their instincts on Soul Searching Sun.
