Just like German cinema from the 20s or 50s, the late Fritz Wunderlich made quite a splash with it… Here, the Munich radio orchestra, under the precise baton of Ulf Schirmer, presents this Orientalist gem in a Breton style with all Bavarian finesse. Everything sounds light and precise in this 2014 live recording; the orchestra plays without ostentation a repertoire that is firmly established, the choir and soloists do not mince words, the spoken voices are even accurate, warm, and never exuberant. This rose is a pearl of dew and reminds us that the often-neglected operetta is a genre that has its rightful place in the realm of classical music. Bravo!
