A simple look at the specifications he imposed on himself since 1989 with this Let Love Rule that astonished critics but fooled no one, allows us to affirm that, 12 years later, Lenny Kravitz has rather well fulfilled his mission. Sometimes elevated to the rank of a crusade, it gave him the opportunity to record albums with a strong 70’s influence, diluted for some, but rather well-crafted for the public who bought them en masse, regularly rallied by some decent hits (Are You Gonna Go My Way).
“Lenny,” the sixth record of the character, still shows him alert in the art of duplication and particularly gifted when it comes to bringing back to life chord progressions that Tony Visconti already found worn out when Marc Bolan tried to impose them on him (God Save Us All, Stillness Of Heart).
Having moved from the stage of a great seducer to that of a big seller (one cannot be everything), Lenny sounds like a good advertising band all by himself (he plays all the instruments) and delivers his melodies that remind of others with a mastery that, in the end, commands respect. Convinced that time stopped to buy cigarettes somewhere before the mid-70s, and has never returned since, he sings with knowledge of his noble cause (Battlefield Of Love, Yesterday Is Gone), slips in solos with bare threads (Let’s Get High) and pounds (his skins) at the forefront of American FM rock, a rather nice place when, like him, one cannot stand to look at expenses.
