An aura of mystery seems to hang eternally over Leif Vollebekk. Although his name is of Norwegian origin, Leif was born in Ottawa, Canada. He is often compared to Bob Dylan for his songwriting, to Jeff Buckley for his vocal timbre, and to Sigur Rós for his ethereal and refined sound signature. As he turns 30, Leif chooses to reveal his soul without restraint, much like his idols Nick Drake, Tom Waits, or Townes Van Zandt, whose songs he loves to cover. For his third album, Twin Solitude, Leif decided to let himself be possessed by his songs. The multi-instrumentalist embraces immediacy with the desire to record a feverish album, with a constant groove, like a heartbeat. The results live up to the initial inspiration: one is immediately captivated by the calm and patience of "Big Sky Country"; the dreaminess of "Into the Ether" featuring Chargaux, a string duo from Brooklyn; the interpolation of Gillian Welch in "East of Eden," a song one would want to listen to infinitely. Also featured are the delightful contributions of Sarah Pagé (The Barr Brothers) and Olivier Fairfield (Timber Timbre). Twin Solitude is a magnificent album, inhabited by a deceptive bravery, overflowing with unexpected refrains. Listen to it while driving a car, on a cold day, with the windows tightly closed. Listen to it lying near an open window. Listen to the entire album, all by yourself.
