There are many unreleased tracks that never made it to vinyl, doomed to never see the light of day. While revisiting these gems, Big Crown decided to launch a new series of records titled Big Crown Vaults. The first volume features the music of Lee Fields & The Expressions. These tracks were recorded during the sessions for Special Night (2016) and It Rains Love (2019). Listening to these songs, you can imagine how difficult some decisions were to exclude them from the albums. "Regenerate" stands out in particular. It’s a song that takes us into the realm of country soul, a style in which Mr. Fields, hailing from North Carolina, thrives. A drum break kicks off the song, then transforms into a chorus where El Michels, Paul & Big Bill Schalda deliver a warm refrain. Lee sings to an upbeat tune about how to rise from a setback in a relationship while The Expressions provide an unstoppable groove. Those who have seen Lee in concert over the past decade may have had the chance to hear his rendition of "Two Timer" by Little Carl Carlton. For those of you who haven’t heard it, Big Crown Vaults is here for you. This faithful version of the song showcases Lee Fields' beautiful voice and the unwavering groove of The Expressions. Another treat here is the funk banger "Do You Know," where Lee Fields addresses some of our societal issues. "Out To Get You" is an instrumental track on which Lee never laid down vocals, but even as a mere rhythm track, it showcases the musical prowess of The Expressions, the band that recorded five studio albums with Lee Fields, now etched in history as great classics of the genre.
