LE TON MITÉ is a musical cooperative centered around a remarkably original artist: the eccentric and endearing musician/visual artist/itinerant luthier McCloud Zicmuse, an American expat permanently residing in Brussels (where he formed the band Hoquets). McCloud recently turned his attention back to his home country, the USA, which he re-explored after a decade of absence, with a mix of affection, perplexity, and concern. This journey inspired a stunning new album, whose fifty tracks, lovingly crafted pop haikus, draw from over half a dozen musical styles (rock, folk, soul, square dance, baroque, free jazz, and various experimental music) to poetically describe the whimsical tribulations of their author. Fifty tracks, like the number of US states, feature a mix of rhythm sections, saxophones, guitars, keyboards, bassoons, flutes, Épinette des Vosges, and percussion. The orchestrations are both extravagant and elegant, sometimes rich, sometimes stripped down, and the whole is obviously put through Le Ton Mité's grinder: one finds McCloud Zicmuse's inimitable touch, his whimsy, his poetic approach to music and life in general. The majority of the lyrics are in French, but he also sings in English, Dutch, and Spanish. The album was recorded near Cherbourg and mixed in Brussels with the collaboration of Marc Meliá (Lonely Drifter Karen), Rutger De Brabander, and Hans Bloemmen, with valuable contributions from John Dieterich (Deerhoof) on five tracks, as well as Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw). It is being released as part of Crammed's legendary MADE TO MEASURE series.
