Born in Baltimore, Lauren Lakis was raised by her single mother. During her childhood, she lost several family members and friends to drug addiction. She became an actress and photographer, seeking to capture the human experience through each of her creations. Her travels led her to live in Prague and Tokyo, before she settled in Los Angeles.In 2016, she experienced a painful breakup, then her mother was the victim of a car accident that left her paralyzed. Although Lakis was already singing in a band at the time, these devastating events prompted her to focus on writing and recording her own music. \"When you're in a state of total surrender, you manage to free yourself from your own blockages and finally do what you desire,\" she explains. After the accident, her mother's health declined, and the album Deadlights was recorded during her final year, with Lakis regularly traveling back and forth to Baltimore to care for her. Despite these circumstances and the recurring theme of loss in her songs, Lakis does not consider Deadlights a mourning album.
