In August 1986, two pairs of sisters (Claudia and Livia Caffagni, Elisabetta and Ella de Mircovich) founded the ensemble La Reverdie. The name, inspired by a poetic genre celebrating the return of spring, perhaps reveals the main trait of a group that, for 30 years now, has captivated audiences as well as critics with the diversity of its approach to the vast and varied repertoire of the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance.
To mark this anniversary, Arcana has designed a box set of 5 CDs bringing together all the thematic projects that over the years La Reverdie has dedicated to different aspects of medieval culture. From the image of femininity to courtly love, from music in medieval thought to the symbolism of light and darkness, each theme developed in this musical collection - an excellent introduction to medieval music - explores specific repertoires from different geographical, literary, or philosophical perspectives. A journey of discoveries that, by virtue of the questions addressed and the freshness of their approach, gives the listener the image of medieval music as a fantastic kaleidoscope of sounds and words reflecting the spirit of the time. The history of Europe itself resonates in this anthology of music from the 13th to the 15th century; Latin and vernacular poetry as well as monody and polyphony, voices and instruments depict a colorful and luminous artistic landscape.
