Like an apparition, LAS ANIMAS DEL CUARTO OBSCURO emerged from the Mexican underground scene in the late 80s and quickly disappeared, leaving behind a few coveted works. Before them, only a handful of Mexican bands experimented with these unprecedented rhythms. These unsuccessful attempts to play this musical style, rooted in the simplicity of punk, blended melancholic and dark chords that are now called post-punk. While bands like SIZE or SILUETA PALIDA flirted with darker music and aesthetics, the path of LAS ANIMAS DEL CUARTO OBSCURO was different. LAS ANIMAS DEL CUARTO OBSCURO and Tono Sanchez, the brains behind these spectral sounds, were deeply committed to doom and gloom, at least from their first recording. Songs about the decadence that could be breathed in the air of Mexico City: police brutality, urban ghost stories, suicidal thoughts, and the loneliness and sadness that a sane person experiences in an environment that constantly pushes them towards desensitization and madness. A true chilango gothic masterpiece, the first album by LAS ANIMAS DEL CUARTO OBSCURO is an ode to Mexican youth. It is the emotional journey of a young person struggling for survival in a country where tradition reigns and difference is abhorred. Originally self-produced by the band in 1988, it is officially reissued for the first time since its creation.
