Kodaline was formed in the northern suburbs of Dublin in 2011; while singer Steve Garrigan, guitarist Mark Prendergast, and drummer Vincent (Vinny) May had been playing together for many years. They were joined by bassist Jason Boland in 2012. It should be noted that on some tracks, the latter does not appear; it is Mark who plays the bass keyboard during the recordings. For the members of Kodaline, "music is not just music, it's a therapy." A message they convey in their progressive and easy-listening tracks, with acoustic guitars, sometimes distorted or sounding slightly retro, piano and synth, as well as the eternal choirs accompanying a well-controlled voice, clear or a bit hoarse, sometimes too high-pitched, reminiscent of Matthew Bellamy from Muse. The bass mainly serves as "reinforcement," in sync with the drums pounding the more intense parts.
