Knumears know that no band exists in a vacuum. They embody a sonic tradition forged and enriched over decades, and one that only those who truly cherish it can perpetuate. Whether you call it screamo, skramz, post-hardcore, or otherwise, this sound has endured through eras and musical fluctuations, now influencing a whole new generation of underground musicians. Their debut album, Directions, is both a love letter and a mapping project, exploring the complex history of a thriving scene while sketching the contours of a new one. Knumears is a band of passionate musicians, but also friends whose bonds are as precious as the music they create together. Since 2021, Knumears (bassist Dante Garcia II, drummer Frankie Lopez, and singer/guitarist Matthew Cole) have been constantly writing, touring, and playing, going from sold-out local shows where young people would scream, climb walls, shout, and dance, to national tours and meeting the same enthusiasm all across the United States. But beyond the whirlwind of touring, the band has also experienced significant personal evolution: strengthening ties with loved ones, new encounters, and the blossoming of their own worlds. "We were all kind of finding ourselves and getting into new relationships," Cole explains, reflecting on the album's creation. "A lot was changing for each of us." Initially, all these personal upheavals were not necessarily conducive to writing a new album. The band was scheduled to record with legendary producer/engineer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta, Touche Amore), but the creative process seemed stalled until it suddenly unlocked: "We were all in a rut," Cole explains. "We had all invested ourselves in other projects while waiting to write this album. But a few weeks before our session with Jack, we sat down and wrote almost everything. We rehearsed three times a week for a month and a half, the inspiration was literally pouring out of us." The result is an album of exceptional urgency, even for a genre as visceral as screamo. Knumears' sound is hyper-immediate yet notoriously difficult to define: it evolved from the raw remnants of late-80s hardcore, earning the appellation "post" in the truest sense of the word, before transforming in the 90s into something even more emotionally intense and musically chaotic with bands like Heroin and Pg. 99 and Orchid. The sound further evolved with a new surge in the late 2000s/early 2010s, when Loma Prieta, Touche Amore, and others transformed the music into something more direct and even at times catchy, in a caustic style all their own.
