Through the Centuries - Songs of Madeleine Dring

Description

English mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately presents an album of songs by Madeleine Dring.Born in 1923 into a theatre family, Madeleine Dring was admitted to the Royal College of Music at the age of 9. There she studied composition with Herbert Howells, and also received lessons from Gordon Jacob and Ralph Vaughan Williams. She was born into the theatre and had a reputation for being able to create numbers, in short. Unfortunately, she died prematurely at the age of fifty-three from a brain aneurysm. The disparate nature of her musical legacy is often attributed to the fragmented nature of her career; consequently, recognition of her work is less significant than that of her contemporaries Elizabeth Lutyens, Elizabeth Maconchy, Grace Williams, and Ruth Gipps.Kitty Whately and Julius Drake have selected a wide range of her compositions, and the album ends with Madeleine Dring's version of Cole Porter's "In the Still of the Night."
