Killer Mike, the half of the hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, protégé of OutKast, committed spokesperson for Black Lives Matter, explores his own story in the deeply autobiographical Michael. Titled after the Atlanta rapper's first name - Michael Santiago Render on his birth certificate - and illustrated by his teenage portrait, the successor to R.A.P. Music (2012) revisits his childhood within the African-American community of Georgia, his hip-hop epiphany, and the shadows of his family past.However, Michael refuses to give in to darkness, evoking with nostalgia the spiritual communion of Sunday services, the aromas of soul food, and the lively discussions in the living rooms of the barbershops of Adamsville, the west Atlanta neighborhood where Killer Mike grew up.
