To celebrate ten years of The Universe Smiles Upon You, Khruangbin asked themselves a simple question: if they could go back ten years, what would they tell themselves? Rather than looking back, the trio chose to act: re-recording that debut album, which has become a classic. Thus was born The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, recorded from January 4 to 6, 2025, in Mark Speer’s same family barn, on the same dates as in 2015. Earthen floor, biting cold, live takes, minimal isolation: the original conditions were recreated, but the tracks have evolved. Some rethought, others subtly transformed, to capture the spirit of the time while transcending it with the perspective of ten years of touring, travel, and success. Across ten hypnotic tracks, the album breathes like ripples on water: space, calm, birds in the background on “August Twelve ii,” creaking wood, and raw, captured spontaneity. A return to roots that repeats nothing: like meeting an old acquaintance, familiar yet enriched by time.
