When producer Nils Winther first heard Kevin Hays during Ron McClure's recording session in 1990 for the album SCCD 31279 "Never Forget," he immediately knew he had discovered an exceptional talent. Three months later, at the age of 22, Hays recorded his first solo album for the label. His second solo album, "Ugly Beauty" (originally released in 1992), is presented here in a superb 24-bit/96 kHz remaster under reference G1297, confirming its status as a landmark album in the pianist's early career. Recorded with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Williams, this album marked Hays's debut in a trio format—a setup that would become essential to his artistic identity. The program blends jazz standards with his original composition "The Well," showcasing his lyrical playing, the depth of his harmonies, and his sense of rhythm.
