Kendra Morris’s *Nine Lives*, out on Karma Chief Records (a division of Colemine Records), not only marks the culmination of the decade since the release of her debut LP *Banshee*, but a turning point in Kendra’s life. *Nine Lives* heralds the beginning of a new chapter, a new label, and an evolution into the next level of adulthood. These songs crystallize moments of what could be nine lives. Kendra, though very much a New Yorker and a veteran of almost two decades in the NYC scene, is originally from Florida and aesthetically embodies American culture writ large, bringing to her contemporary sound influences found in music and cinema from the mid-20th century. Her music evokes images of road trips to strange and wonderful places. A visual artist, animator, and filmmaker as well, Kendra repeatedly leverages the metaphor of the feline’s nine lives. In the context of her musical trajectory alone, there are at least three lives. Her discovery of multi-tracking on a karaoke machine as a child, her time playing in bands in Florida, her move to New York and creating her music alone on an 8-track, her first two records on Wax Poetics, her 2016 EP *Babble* and her collaborations with DJ Premier, David Sitek, MF Doom, Czarface, Ghostface Killah, and Dennis Coffey, to name a few. The life of this multi-disciplinary artist contains stories through which we can all relate to the universal themes of love, loss, and overcoming our fears. Kendra continues to answer her spiritual calling of creating music and art, come what may, with no intention of slowing down, but rather with the belief that she can always evolve and with impatience to begin living her next nine lives.
