The legendary electro duo Coldcut, founders of the Ninja Tune label, returns with prestigious guests for a collaborative album with colors of Africa. Keleketla! is a collaborative project that unfolds from Johannesburg to London, passing through Lagos, Los Angeles, and West Papua. It took shape during a musical meeting between the English duo Coldcut and a delegation of South African musicians including guitarist Sibusile Xaba, percussionist Thabang Tabane, and rapper Yugen Blakrok. From these initial sessions, the album was enriched by contributions from other top musicians including the late Tony Allen, the Anglo-Nigerian musician who began his career in Fela's Egypt 80, Dele Sosimi, the pioneering spoken word group The Watts Prophets, the famous afrobeat orchestra based in Brooklyn Antibalas, and West Papuan activist Benny Wenda; as well as the best of the new English jazz scene. This meeting between artists influenced by jazz and whose music is imbued with spirituality has resulted in an album that looks to the future where gqom beats (this musical movement inspired by house that developed in Durban at the beginning of the decade) blend with activist chants and live Afrobeat percussion. Keleketla! means "response" in the sense of a reply to a call and this title is a direct reference to the aim of this project: to create a musical territory from several recording sessions, from one continent to another.
