IN THE VEIN OF ANGEL OLSEN AND SHARON VAN ETTEN, DISCOVER THE DEBUT ALBUM OF THE AMERICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER SIGNED TO FULL TIME HOBBY
Katie Von Schleicher's career began with a fortunate accident: while interning at Da Da Bing Records in New York, her boss, Ben Goldberg, suggested she record a cassette that the label would later release. Her first self-produced and recorded composition was born; a strange, ethereal, and tangy pop. With her cassette released under a pseudonym, Von Schleicher piqued curiosity around Bleaksploitation, to the point that the album was also released on vinyl in spring 2016.
On her debut album, Von Schleicher strikes again with magical and unyielding sounds. Shitty Hits is an ode to the luminous and brilliant tracks that bloomed on 70s radio waves; the songs you drive to and the ones you sometimes cry to. From beginning to end, Shitty Hits deals with feelings of isolation and weakness.
With saturated vocals, distorted percussion, and continuous guitar riffs, Shitty Hits tackles snobbery, the quest for perfection in favor of imperfect humanity. Inspired by sounds à la Paul McCartney or Jeff Buckley's album Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk, Shitty Hits was created on a Tascam 488 cassette recorder in the singer's childhood home in Maryland. Where Bleaksploitation cultivated a gentle acoustic nihilism, Shitty Hits overflows with confidence and maturity.
