Since the launch of their international career in 1980, initiated by their two-piano version of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, the Labèque sisters have continued to multiply musical adventures, swirling between classical, contemporary music, electro, rock, and jazz. A reissue of their double album Minimalist Dream House, originally released in 2013 to accompany the fiftieth anniversary of the minimalist music movement, follows their recent signing with Deutsche Grammophon. This album traces the history of the musical movement, from its genesis with In C by Terry Riley, the founding work of the movement, to its repercussions in avant-garde rock and electronic music. The first CD features a selection of works by John Cage, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Arvo Pärt, and Howard Skempton, performed solely by the Labèque sisters. The second disc includes works by the direct heirs of the movement such as Brian Eno, Ahex Twin, and Radiohead. For this second part, the Labèque sisters were joined by a rock quartet, notably featuring guitarist David Chalmin and drummer Raphaël Séguigner, each contributing an original composition. From minimalist processes exploited in all simplicity to harmonic grids worthy of the most naive pop songs, this double album wonderfully illustrates the era of motorism and repetitiveness and is imbued with the inventiveness and boldness of the Labèque sisters.
