Formed in 1991, Katatonia quickly established itself as one of the pillars of Scandinavian gothic doom/death alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Released in 1996, their second album Brave Murder Day became a classic of the genre, blending stripped-down structures, haunting atmospheres and cross-influences from Paradise Lost, Kent or Slowdive. Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) handles the majority of the growl vocals, while Jonas Renkse performs the sung passages and plays the drums. Recorded at Unisound with Dan Swano, the album marks an essential turning point in the history of the Swedish band.
