THE BEST RECORDINGS OF A MAJOR FIGURE OF THE AMERICAN NEW WAVE. The work of an actress, musician, visual artist, and unyielding creative spirit, Dreaming of You (1971-1976) on the Anthology Recordings label brings together for the first time the best recordings of Karen Black. Produced by Cass McCombs and meticulously restored from the original tapes, the fifteen tracks are a holistic representation of Karen's dreamy and introspective musical identity. A major figure of the American New Wave, Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning, Karen Black also wrote and recorded a wealth of original songs in the midst of her meteoric rise as an actress. Several were made with Bones Howe and Elliot Maze, two of the most prestigious producers of the era. Recalling the all-purpose qualities of Judy Collins and the quiet mystery of Billie Holiday, she sings largely over a simple acoustic guitar, her voice like a beam of light amidst fantastical tales and heartaches. For Karen, writing songs was like a character study; she often recorded multiple takes of a song, changing tone, phrasing, or cadence with a vocal range spanning from deep, grounded lows to celestial highs. Cass McCombs invited Karen onto his album Catacombs (2009). Planning to make an album together, they recorded two tracks in 2012: \"Royal Jelly\" and \"I Wish I Knew The Man I Thought You Were.\" The latter is a devastating testament to the power dynamics between a teacher and a student, based on Karen's experience in the 1960s at university. She sings over light reverberations of acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and pedal steel, evoking a sense of distant memory yet ever-present pain. Karen passed away in 2013, but upon unearthing an old box filled with tapes spanning all eras of her life, Cass held onto the idea of finishing a record with her. Over three years, Cass and Tardon Feathered, a sound engineer specializing in restoration, cleaned, transferred, and examined the remnants of Karen's musical legacy, working from damaged and mold-covered tapes. They found an embarrassment of riches. If the mystery persists despite these musical treasures, what is clear is the talent and ambition of a self-taught woman, who was making waves in a new era of Hollywood, and even beyond those shifting borders. Her songs reveal a complete portrait of the musical identity she so often played with on screen, where confession and character form a poignant and singular bond.","brand":"Karen Black","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57520705667416,"sku":null,"price":20250328.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en\/products\/karen-black_dreaming-of-you-1971-76_2025_disco-virgin-music-group","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
