Medaho

Description

Mèdaho is the first album by the Brooklyn-based afro-funk group Kaleta & Super Yamba. Leon Ligan-Majek, a former Juju fighter, and Kaleta, originally from the Republic of Benin, take stock of the group's shared reverence for the raw, psychedelic, and afro-funk sound that captivated Kaleta, a music lover in Benin. Mèdaho means "big brother," "elder," or "teacher" and is dedicated to Kaleta's late brother, Ligan-Ozavino Pascal, who introduced him to funk and soul music at a very young age. This early passion led to international tours with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and, more recently, Lauryn Hill. Now based in New York, Kaleta has taken the reins and become the leader of the Super Yamba Band, a group known for its furious dance parties in Brooklyn and original compositions influenced by afro-funk. Mèdaho explores some of the rarest grooves and psychedelic sounds from Benin and Nigeria, and brings to life extremely danceable music! FIP Article
