TURN OUT THE LIGHTS

Description

Hailed by the New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and many others, Sprained Ankle, released in 2015, revealed the talent of a young woman from Tennessee with her stripped-down and intimate indie folk and unique atmosphere, in the vein of Bon Iver's fabulous For Emma, Forever Ago. The Matador label was not mistaken in signing her straight away: in Julien Baker, they had a highly talented songwriter. Recorded in the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, her hometown, 'Turn Out The Lights' retains the touching and confessional songwriting that made her known, with an even more haunting production. Throughout the album, the young American meditates on her own experiences and those of her loved ones, exploring the inner conflicts that rage within each of us: how to face and overcome trials and what impact this struggle has, both on us and on those around us, whatever the nature of our relationships. Written, composed and produced by Julien Baker with Craig Silvey on mixing (The National, Arcade Fire, Florence & the Machine...), 'Turn Out The Lights' proves to be an album of deep empathy that embraces the dark areas and complex truths of human nature and psychic balance: expressing one's hardest emotions through music to better move towards the light.
