Disappeared in 2012 at the age of 103, Eliott Carter truly traversed the musical 20th century and has already taken the path of the next one. Close to Charles Ives, he lived in Paris where he attended the Ecole Normale de Musique and Nadia Boulanger. The musician, a friend of Pierre Boulez, spoke perfect French and was just as steeped in European culture as he was in American culture of his time. His mentors in music (besides Ives mentioned above) were the great geniuses of the 20th century, including Bartók, Varèse, Hindemith, and Stravinsky. Originally influenced by a certain neoclassical current, he soon forged a strong independent musical identity; he is unclassifiable, distanced from the integral serial current, his writing is singular. He composed until the very end of his life and remains a major figure in the musical life of his time. The entirety of his String Quartets by the Juilliard Quartet was recorded in his presence and constitutes a precious and authentic testimony of his music, by the greatest interpreters among the artists of chamber music.
