Though born in San Francisco, Nashville-based American singer-songwriter Josh Gray grew up thousands of miles away in Maryland. He got his first guitar at 16, but didn’t play his first show until 15 years later. When asked what took so long, he simply replies, “I wasn’t ready.” This theme of taking the time to do things right becomes apparent when you hear his music. His thoughtful and often poetic lyrics stay with you long after the songs end. Josh Gray’s sound is a blend of folk, blues, country, and rock that first inspired him to pick up a guitar. He is a storyteller, a protest singer, and a poet, connecting generations and genres to form his signature style of American songwriting.
In 2015, Josh Gray released his debut self-titled EP recorded in Frederick, MD. Just a block away from the coffee shop where a friend dared him to play for the first time. That year, Josh Gray put nearly 30,000 miles on his car traveling all over MD, PA, WV, and VA. Sometimes seven nights a week, playing shows and open mics.
Seeking to further his skills, Gray moved to Nashville in 2016. Putting together some of Music City’s best musicians, he formed his band, Josh Gray and the Dark Features. Without the money to record, they turned to crowdfunding. They blew past their goal, funding the album with fan support.
“Songs of the Highway” was recorded to tape at the famed Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. Since its release, it has garnered rave reviews in Nashville and beyond. This sophomore album earned Gray a distribution deal in the Netherlands. It was named one of the best albums of the decade by Hi-Tones Record Store in Rocklin, CA. In the Netherlands, it was voted one of the top ten albums of 2019 out of 600 albums at Warenhuis Vanderveen Assen.
In 2022, Josh Gray ran another successful crowdfunding campaign to record his new album “Walk Alone.” This time he partnered with CRS in the Netherlands to distribute “Walk Alone” to record stores all over Europe.
