FADOS DE COIMBRA E OUTRAS CANCOES

Description

New volume in this legendary album series by Portuguese artist and freedom fighter, Jose Afonso, one of Portugal's most elegant and influential singer-songwriters. "Fados De Coimbra E Outras Cançoes" (1981) will be released for the first time, fully remastered. Born in 1929, José Afonso, also known as Zeca Afonso or simply Zeca, became an icon in Portugal due to the role of his music in the resistance against the dictatorial Estado Novo regime. His song "Grandola, Vila Morena," officially banned in Portugal at the time, was used as the starting signal for the peaceful Carnation Revolution in 1974 and was broadcast on radio on the night of April 25 to signal the Movimento das Forças Armadas (MFA) to oppose and overthrow the dictatorship. Over the following years, more than 15 albums were released, Afonso played worldwide and is still considered a pioneering activist for human rights and against political oppression. "Fados De Coimbra E Outras Cançoes" is a showcase of his own songs and his interpretations of traditional pieces, which he dedicated to his father and his friend, the Portuguese singer Edmundo de Bettencourt.
